I guess we just got carried away……………

This morning I was attempting to fold and put away a basket of clean, dry clothes that had been staring at me for three days. Fearing my family would assume it was dirty and begin to pile their soiled items on top of the clean, I decided it was time.

My moments away from the girls gave them free reign over the house and they took full advantage.

Not even two t-shirts into the pile, Ellie enters with her head hanging.

Ellie: Mommy? We got a little carried away.

Me: Okay El, what did you do?

Hanna: Well, I guess we got a little carried away.

Me (trying to be calm): What did you do girls?

Hanna: The water…….

Me interrupting: WATER!!! WHERE!!! What were you doing with water?

I tried to follow them to the water problem that may carry us all away but they stood staring at their feet. Where was lassie to guide me to the crime scene?

Hanna: We got a little carried away

ME: Yes, I understand you got carried away, what did you do?

Ellie: Well, I guess we got a little carried away.

ME shouting: GIRLS!!! WHAT DID YOU DO AND WHERE IS THE WATER?

Hanna: We got the water and the soap and…she started motioning huge circles with her arms and I expected a tidal wave to knock me down when I did eventually find whatever it is they were talking about. We just got carried away Mom, that’s all.

Ellie: We took some water from the sink and…..we got a little carried away (shoulders shrugging)

Did someone tell these two if they said they ‘got carried away’ it was a free pass to do whatever, wherever and with whatever liquid they wanted? That all would be forgiven and they could carry on with whatever delinquent activity they were engaging in?

Me, one more time: What did you do girls and where is the water?

Hanna: We just got…

Me: I KNOW YOU GOT CARRIED AWAY!!!!!!! Where is the water?

Ellie: In the basement

Frantic, I storm down the stairs. I don’t hear water running, I don’t see puddles or water pooling or a water line leading me to whatever it was that carried them away. My feet were not wet, the hose had not been brought inside for an indoor make-shift slip ‘n slide. I breathed a little and followed the turkeys over to their princess kitchen where they had taken plastic ladles filled with water and dumped them into the plastic princess kitchen sink. This was not the tsunami I was expecting.

It was not the end of the world. I guess they just got carried away.
