Skittles….

I seem to be on a random-acts-of-kindness kick this week and rather than steer us all in another direction, why not just embrace it for at least another day.

My 10 year old swam in a swim meet this past weekend. Swam? Swum? She swam/swum all weekend long. The weather outside was arguably as good as we get in Canada, possibly the world over and we were inside, in a hazy, chlorine-infused aquarium-for-dummies cheering on our kids, high-fiving their victories and watching them hug it out with their buddies when things didn’t go according to plan.

After three, long days, breathing in spandex-sweat everyone had hit a wall (some not hard enough but that part of the story involves electronics and timing gizmos), metaphorically speaking.

I think Hanna was ready to throw in the towel (I am on a roll) when she told me about something wonderful and completely unexpected.

One of her teammates had to leave the meet early (lucky bugger) and on one of Hanna’s many trips to her duffle bag hoping if she swept her hand around just one more time she might find that granola bar she had missed the first seven times, instead, she found a package of Skittles.

“A WHOLE, UNOPENED package of Skittles, Mom!”

Beside the Skittles was a note, “Enjoy the rest of your day Hanna, I’m sure you’ll be great. From, Nemo.” (The name of the friend has been changed to Nemo….her actual name is Dory).

Go do something nice for someone. You have no idea how a small gesture like leaving someone a package of Skittles can turn their whole day around.
