It’s All About The Lunch….

My five year old has taken a liking to gymnastics.

If you ask her what it is specifically about the sport she likes she would tell you straight up, “It’s the lunch.”

To some, this may seem like a strange answer.

For starters, Chloe has never had a lunch at gymnastics. She sees the older (five and a half year old), more advanced gymnasts pause briefly during a 17 hour marathon practice to come out into a secret lunch room equipped with bars (to prevent escapes) bullet proof glass, an intercom and a window they think is a mirror but the rest of us can see them dining and wishing we too could be in there drinking fruit smoothies while doing intermittent burpees sets.

Me: Chloe, do you like swinging on the bars?

Chloe: Yep but what I really like about gymnastics is the lunch.

When I told her we had signed her up for the next session she asked if this was finally “the one.”

For some athletes, “the one” might mean, the one where they get to swing from the rings, the one where they get to dip their hands in the communal chalk bowl near the bars, the one where they drop to their bums on the trampoline and finally get to add a twist.

We called this “swivel hips” when I was a kid and that was as advanced as one could get, before lunch anyway.
