One, Two, Three, Four, Zoom, Zoom, Zoom….

Chloe and I are playing Candy Land. A game we haven’t played in yonks.

I had probably been lulled into the ridiculous set of rules imposed by my children and never thought to question them years earlier due to complete delirium from lack of sleep.

But when Chloe pulled out the board today, a dime and a penny our game pieces, the dice from Monopoly Junior and started to move around to various candy zones, I nodded to myself and ran with it.

Chloe rolled the “?” on the dice or “Chance” as its known in Monopoly Junior Circles. In Candy Land, the Chance roll means you can re-roll if you are Chloe’s opponent or if you’re Chloe, you can move to any square on the board you wish.

Then it got better.

When I landed on a special square, I was immediately moved back to the “Start” space. There were no words spoken, this was just a universally accepted punishment for me landing on something awesome.

Chloe rolled a four and moved her dime, “One, two, three, four, zoom, zoom, zoom” (an additional three squares).

Huh.

Look, I play board games with my kids to spend time together, to learn about how the real world works, how rules apply even to something as innocent as floor time as a family but most importantly, I play games so we can have real conversations.

For example, Chloe asked me, “Mommy, when I’m a teenager and you’re a granny…….”
