Welcome To Sandy’s….

After school today, the girls in a desperate effort to kill time given they were not permitted to watch t.v. defaulted to one of their favourite pastimes–play writing followed by inviting the audience (Chloe and I) into the living room for a taste of what theatre in the future might have in store.
There were a few dance numbers rehearsed (none of which made it past dress rehearsal) and a lot of bickering over character names (this would later be a key element in both the naming of the play and who would be considered the lead).

After a number of “you go first,” “no you go firsts” the audience was ushered into our chair-and-a-half careful not to spill any Wheat Thins on the velvet ropes.

And so it began.

Two girls, ages eight and five, a broom and a lot of giggling.

Dialogue that would wow them the world over.

Act 1, Scene 1

Hanna: Welcome to Sandy’s! (while spinning the broom and tapping her toe with it) The audience is wondering if Sandy’s is a restaurant or a shoe store.

Ellie: Welcome to Sandy’s! (yanking the broom violently from her sister’s grasp, tapping her own foot and hitting the hardwood floor). Audience will remain silent and deal with floor dents and scratches post encore.

Hanna: (impressive broom stick handling) Welcome to Sandy’s!

After the fifth “Welcome to Sandy’s” I started to wonder if my sweet potato fries needed a stirring then the dialogue got interesting.

Hanna: Hi, I’m Kim.

Ellie: Hi, I’m Rosalinda.

Commence parade of curtsies.
