Pool Party….

Tomorrow we will host our very first pool party.

We sent out invitations to our families to join us for the first ever dip in our new pool a little over a month ago stressing the importance of bringing towels. The towel thing has been the number one complaint from existing pool owners I polled for my survey.

At this time we do not yet have a liner or water in the pool and the weather is calling for showers and a high of twelve degrees.

This exercise in planning has been interesting. When the pool project began last November, we started thinking about our first pool party. We assumed June 2nd would be the perfect date to host because a) surely the pool would be finished and b) June. Is. Warm.

We. Were. Wrong.

I ran into a neighbour who is also hosting a pool party tomorrow. I didn’t feel right being the one to let him know he wasn’t.

I guess the risk with having a pool is planning these parties that sometimes, due to circumstances beyond our control may not ever happen. What is the back-up plan?

All week I’ve been worrying about what we would do if the pool wasn’t ready as though the success of the party rested solely on all twenty-five of us pruning ourselves in what I can only assume would be frigid hose water because there would never be enough time to warm it even if we did have water (and a liner).

At no time did I envision anyone outside of the water. We were all just going to dive for random weighted items from the bottom of the pool, take turns doing cannonballs, eat our bbq’d items on plastic floating trays and inevitably throw someone in while fully clothed and laugh at their expense for the duration of the gathering.

What did people do to entertain themselves before swimming?

The truth is I think a few people were relieved swimming would have to wait–specifically the person who was the likely “push-in” candidate.

It will all work out because it always does. This theme change doesn’t mean we won’t have a great visit with everyone while we plan the next REAL pool party.

I did come to grips with something that has taken me thirteen years to consider. We were CRAZY to have planned our wedding outside!
