Sounds….

Sometimes I hear crazy noises in our house.

Any night Greg has a late meeting, our fridge makes a gurgling sound resembling a full body contact game of ping pong trying to break free from behind the coils and into our kitchen.

It has taken me almost ten years to get used to the noise and it will take another lifetime to convince Greg it’s not just in my head.

Now that the girls are finished with the Elmo guitar that would spontaneously start playing Muppet-rock every time you stood within 15 metres of the toy basket it was buried in, we’ve moved onto electronics.

Sometimes I hear a series of ‘meep meep meep meeps’ around the house. Before my brain realizes it’s not the frozen ping pong players, I’ve missed the Skype call from Grandma and Grandpa on Hanna’s phone.

It’s not that I’m going crazy. There are too many weird noises that come with modern technology. Our washing machine sounds like a doorbell, our doorbell sounds like a telephone, our dryer sounds like a flock of seagulls, our seagulls sound tired.

But this one really got to me last night.

I heard this beeping, no buzzing, no a hum-buzz, beep beep beep, beep, bee bee beep and I started following the sound.

I looked at the fridge, I called for Elmo, I started yelling, “Skype? Is that you?”

I finally traced the sound down the hall, feeling the wall and using the cup-to-ear technique to guide me.

Greg and Hanna were watching Diggers.
