An Eye For Art….

Chloe handed me a piece of paper after school and said, “My friend made this for me.”

Wow, this “friend” has a similar artistic style to yours Chloe and appears to favour the red and purple Crayolas as well, over the softer, more distinct lines of say, Laurentian pencil crayons.

Upon closer inspection, I put on my artist-beret and dissected each piece of the picture, frame by frame, using all of my senses. (The markers were scented)

The first thing I noticed, most obviously, someone is being pushed down a set of stairs.

The faceless, purple (maybe bruised) stick-figure is not winning this battle as his or her head seems to be bouncing from step to step and with no ability to bend his/her arms and virtually no muscle mass, this does not end well.

The person doing the pushing “Red” has an undeniable grin on his/her face but there’s no mistaking the purple eyebrows. Are they borrowed from the faceless person falling down the stairs or was this a function of the red marker running out of ink and the purple being the next closest in the box?

Then there are the three friends on the left side standing in a weightless human pyramid.

There’s a door keeping them out and blocking their view of Red’s guilt. Are they hat salesman?

The guy on the very top has a pretty good view of the push but doesn’t appear bothered in the slightest. He’s not even willing to take the second, parallel staircase to come to the aid of the person falling.

There’s a purple eggplant swinging from the ceiling that might have spewed out whatever is about to hit the poor guy bouncing down the stairs, though Red does have her throwing arm outstretched and may have just tossed it after the big push.

But art is subjective.
