The girls spent the weekend at the cottage with Grandma and Grandpa and we were able to stay connected through texting and emailing.

I loved seeing a message in my inbox on Saturday morning from my 8 year old. There were emoticons of hearts, happy faces and the sun and it simply said, “Good morning my sunshine.” It brightened my mood for the entire day.

It also got me thinking about how easy it is to touch base with our kids when they are a couple of hours away and how different that is from when our parents left us with relatives. We would write them letters using a rock and chisel and they would receive them two weeks later when we were all under the same roof, their time away already old news.

Ellie had a few moments of quiet introspection this weekend and wanted to tell me she had made an important decision while away.

She explained, “Mom, I decided something. I don’t want to have crutches. I do want to have crutches but I don’t want to break my leg to get them. If I do break my leg then obviously I want crutches. I just want them for walking and trying out.”
