The Meaning of Christmas….

Yesterday, we set up our Christmas tree. It was long overdue and the kids had been excited to hang their stockings, organize ornaments favoring the lower 1/3 of the tree and the most coveted Christmas decorating activity, placing the hand-knit nativity scene made by my Grandma on the mantel.
I tried to keep the Christmas discussions meaningful and asked the girls their thoughts about the holiday.
Hanna: Christmas is about baby Jesus being born and then coming down to our planet, earth, but not being treated very well. And presents.

Ellie: Christmas means Jesus was born and for his birthday, Santa brings presents to celebrate.

Both solid answers, we moved quickly onto the nativity scene.

I was cleaning the glass from the kitchen table where we experienced a first for our family. Chloe threw up right on the lunch table while we were eating. Classic Christmas Chloe and her bag of barfy tricks.

I overheard the girls organizing the nativity scene. Hanna held up one of the three Wise Men and asked, “Is this one of the wisemen?” as in, “is this John Wisemen, in the knit?” Indeed it was.

They quickly grouped their characters as if choosing teams for a dodge ball game and I overheard the following traditional Christmas dialogue exchange.

John Wisemen to Mary: So like are you having a baby or something?

Mary to JW: Like yeah. Why do you think I have this crib?

Joseph: Who am I again? Am I a wisemen?

Duck from the Mother Goose series: You’re Joseph. You’re with Mary.

Joseph: Oh, are you our duck?

Duck: Yeah. Can you believe what Mary is wearing?

Joseph: No. She’s not very fashion sense.

Mary Poppins: Hello, did anyone need an umbrella for your baby? (MP holding knitted umbrella over the manger)

Mary Poppins to Virgin Mary: What’s on your head? You look weird.

VM to MP: You do too. Is that duck yours?

Hanna: Mom, who are these guys again?

Mom removes rubber gloves: Those are shepherds

Ellie: Where is our limo!

Me: I said Shepherds Ellie, not chauffeurs.

Hanna: Yeah Ellie, they ride on these sheep and this one rides the duck.

End Scene.

Merry Christmas Everyone.
