Smell-O-Vision….

Hanna’s 8th birthday party was a showing of Spy Kids 3 in 4D. I was busy trying to figure out how the dance revolution video game in the lobby worked and less curious about what the four in 4D represented until all twelve kids were lined up in the theatre.

Everyone had a Kinder-Egg, a bucket of popcorn, a drink of their choosing and Epi-pens attached to sweaters, precautionary measures against a multitude of childhood allergies.

Each child was handed a piece of paper with the numbers 1-8 and whenever one of the numbers appeared on screen, they were to scratch it and sniff the number which would ultimately reflect something relating to the scene they were watching. I must admit I was thankful, none of the scents had anything to do with ragweed, barnyard animals, bee stings or the dreaded peanut.

I took great interest in the scene where a dog passed gas and the number four flashed on the screen. All twelve kids under our supervision as well the dozens of others in the theatre began to scratch and smell the number four on their cards.

“Oh, this stinks like a fart.” I heard one child remark. (or perhaps that was Greg?)

“I’m gonna puke!” said another.

“This is disgusting.” They all began to chime in and yet, none of them thought to set down their smelly cards and concentrate on the movie. Most of the kids, those closest to hurling seemed to get the most pleasure from scratching even harder on their cards and smelling over and over again while relaying to the crowd how incredibly wretched the odour of a dog’s fart really is.

I’m thinking 3D was a pretty phenomenal feat. Perhaps we should have stopped there.
