Cut Me Some Flax….

Hiding healthy powders and seeds in our kid’s food has never been easier.

Flax comes in just about every form; powder, seed, dish soap, fairy dust.

Not unlike its cousin, iocaine powder, made famous in the movie “The Princess Bride” flax is odourless, tasteless, it just doesn’t kill you instantly.

My Mom did not have the same luxury when she was hiding chunks of nutrition in our snacks.

She hid white, Vitamin C pills on our multigrain toast and then spread all natural peanut butter over top. Sure there were holes in the toast before the spreading was done but that was a function of the thickness of the peanut butter, fighting the thinness of the toast and the fact there was an obstacle course of Vitamins and pills strategically placed within the grains.

I can’t imagine how much healthier we might have been if she had access to all of today’s ground seeds and all of their healing powers.

I have become my Mother.

I am guilty of the odd sprinkling of flax seeds, chia powder, Vit D drops and the kids don’t suspect a thing.

Zucchini still has that same, stringy, somewhat watered down texture and the green colour makes it easy to spot but I suspect they’re coming up with a zuc-powder to hit store shelves soon.

I tried a new cookie recipe the other day that called for a can of chick peas in the batter.

My kids raced to the tray of warm cookies and gobbled up nearly half a cookie each before turning to me looking for a tell on my face.

I kept my eyes low, busied myself washing dishes (with chia soap) and kept the conversation light.

Hanna: Mom, what’s in these cookies? I mean they’re okay (trying not to hurt my feelings, how sweet) but they’re not my favourite.”

Ellie: Oh Mom. These are good but I agree, not my favourite.

Chloe: Gross!

Greg (whispering sweetly in my ear so the kids couldn’t hear): I have no idea what’s in these but this is hands down the worst cookie I’ve ever eaten in my entire life.

Yes, but they’re good for you!
