The Pantry….

Some dear friends are moving to a land far, far away (USA) and rather than smuggle their canned goods and risk a life in prison, we very happily accepted their non-perishables to be enjoyed (by definition) over the course of now until the end of time.

You can learn a lot about people from what they keep in their pantry.

Three items in particular gave me reason for pause.

1      1. Water chestnuts. Greg used to ask me to buy water chestnuts every time I went to the grocery store but I never knew what recipe I would use them in. He would say things like, “Why don’t you ever buy water chestnuts, they’re my favourite.” Or, “This will be a test. If you really love me, you’ll buy water chestnuts.” Or, “My Mom always found recipes that called for water chestnuts. Why can’t you be more like…?” And “Seriously, no water chestnuts? To the chipper!” Greg never explained what he planned to do with the water chestnuts but there they were, someone’s castaways, two cans. They are going to Rock. Greg’s. World.

2. 2. Refried beans. Another item I have never purchased because I just never understood how you fried a bean and after waiting an acceptable amount of time, fried it again.

3. 3. Creamed corn. Me: What vegetables would you like to have for dinner tonight? Greg: Do we have water chestnuts or refried beans? Me: No. Greg: Creamed corn.

I thought I was sad to see our friends moving but clearly the timing couldn’t be better. She’s obviously in love with my husband.
