Embarrassing….

I drove Chloe to school yesterday morning.

We chatted about Christmas decorations and the disproportionate number of times Ashlyn and Carter get to take the attendance to the office and whether or not they are in love and/or already married.

The second I opened the door to let Chloe out of the van she said, “Mommy, you are really embarrassing me.”

I can’t for the life of me figure out what could have embarrassed a four year old in that moment.

Was it the way I slid the door open in that seamless motion?

Was it the way I gave my glove a quick pull to be sure my wrist was totally covered?

Waving to another parent I recognized?

Chloe: Mommy, you are just so embarrassing right now. Look, there’s Bentley, do NOT embarrass me. Oh that Bentley, look at him hopping like a frog to our line. Do not embarrass me.

Chloe confided that Bentley is in love with her.  (Bentley may not be aware of this while he’s busy perfecting his leap frogging). “If he kisses me it will be so stinky and embarrassing. I do NOT want a boy to be in love with me. It is so embarrassing.”

For those wondering what the biggest difference is between age three (which she was a week ago) and age four, I would tell them three year olds are just out of diapers, four year olds are in love and embarrassed of their parents.

On the way home from swimming last night she asked, “Is this one of those breaks from school now?”

Me: Do you mean, is it the weekend? Yes, tomorrow is Saturday and the next day is Sunday. You have those two days at home to play and then you get to go back to school on Monday.

Chloe: Ahh Man! I do not like the breaks. That is so embarrassing.
