Grade 6 Homework….

Our weekend was busy, made up mostly of swim practices, swim meets, trying to deliver the right child to the right swim practice/swim meet and the gymnast to her Grandparents’ house.

I reminded Hanna several times as I ran up and down the lane ropes, “Remember, you have homework you have to do this weekend!” and also, “Way to go!” and finally, “Is this pointless? Can you even hear me under the water?” Whispering as I walk away, “Mommy loves you….” and then I would break out in an awesome on-deck running-man in an effort to embarrass one or all of my children.

The homework thing tends to get put on the back-burner over the weekend because, well, it’s the weekend and teachers have caught onto this insanely busy 48 homework-less window for families so they’ve met in a saloon and decided homework is now due on Tuesdays.

But here’s the problem. That leaves all of the homework for Monday night which is really no different than just trying to cram it all into a busy Sunday night because Monday, ah Monday, I’m looking at my calendar over my shoulder, oh right, Monday is volleyball night so Sunday night it is!

Hanna asks me how to convert millimetres to kilometres like I’m supposed to know this without googling anything.

I try to turn it on her, “Well, how many millimetres in a centimetre?”

“Ten.”

“Right.” (That’s right, isn’t it?)

“So if you have ten millimetres in one centimetre, how do they get the Caramilk inside the Caramilk bar?”

I don’t know why she’s not laughing. That was funny and this isn’t even due until Tuesday. This Tuesday however, she has some language homework to hand in, a Science test and maybe a French quiz.

I’m not loving grade six the second time around and I’m trying to distance myself, allowing my child to take charge (and pride) in her study habits, her homework assignments and her organization.

It’s tough when all weekend I’m cheering her on saying things to her like, “Work hard! Give it your all! I’ll help you with your homework if you always try your best!”
And now, I’m stuck trying to make a “connection” between my life and a novel I’ve never read.

I knew this would backfire.
