Snow Days….

I realize it’s been a long time since I was a kid, but I think we had one “Snow Day” (school was closed) about every three years.

A snow day back then meant there was either so much snow on the ground that all the shovels in all the land couldn’t have carved out a wide enough path for school age children to side-step to school or, all the pipes in all the schools had burst overnight but not enough water trickled down to the fields to form a proper ice rink.

Then and only then did our schools close.

Yesterday, our kids were home from school. Technically, the school was open but the buses were cancelled.

At some point in my children’s academic career, I was told that our school is comprised of 99% bus students. This leaves the possibility that 1% of walkers might attend school but of that 1%, attendance is completely optional.

This is a long shot because on very cold days, the walkers have a longer trek than the students who only have to walk from the bus to the front door of the school.

I emailed someone who lives in a neighbouring house the last time this happened and they were not chancing the cold hike. This made our decision to begin a lengthy game of full-contact, family charades a slam-dunk.

The last time our buses were cancelled but school was open, we had a disproportionate number of kindergarten kids arrive at school, more than any other grade.

Why does this surprise anyone?

But yesterday when I looked outside before reading the notice that our buses were cancelled I wondered, just for a moment, if we were given the day off to celebrate the crystal blue sky, the sun we hadn’t seen in days and the completely, bone-dry roads.

I wonder if Florida students ever get “Sun Days.”
