This Morning….

One of the reasons I like reading to (or with) my kids is listening to them overcome an obstacle, a struggle through a sentence trying to make sense of it and when they finally do, they are so proud of themselves it makes me smile.

Sometimes it’s a word they are finding challenging or a phrase they stumble over.
I remember the first time I saw “For all intents and purposes” typed on a page in a book and I thought, “Ha, they’ve got it wrong. It should be ‘For all intensive purposes’” something I had been saying for as long as I could remember. I guess if you say it fast enough, no one is going to correct you and if they did correct me, I would probably pretend I had been saying it correctly all along. Ah books.

So last night, reading with my eight year old she stopped in the middle of a sentence and said, “This morning, this morning…this….morning.”

I asked her what she was doing and she said, “Mom, you know how you always say, “Thi s’morning? Thi s’morning? S’morning?”

Yes.

“Well it’s supposed to be ‘this morning’.”

Yes, I’m aware of that.

“Well you always say it like ‘S’morning” instead of two words.”

She’s right, I do put the S’more in S’morning.

But for all intensive purposes, it sounds better my way.
