Setting The Table….

Our kids have been assigned a few household chores or “rent” as we sometimes refer to them.

Hanna is responsible for the laundry, Ellie collects the garbage and Chloe has recently been tasked with setting the table and helping to clear before and after meals.

Last night, she asked what she needed to put on the table and I explained there were still five members of the family so we needed five forks, (I would be responsible for setting the knives), five plates, five glasses and the water pitcher.

I noticed her looking around the kitchen to plan the most efficient way to get all of the aforementioned items from the various cupboards to the table.

I walked outside to start the barbecue and noticed through the window, Chloe had a plate tucked tightly under her chin. I smirked and wondered if she would make it all the way to the table with the plastic plate wedged into her throat.

When she got to the table, I saw her reach for something tucked into the depths of both armpits. Oh good, It was our five, dinner forks.

So, in the category of “Things I never thought I would say” (a list that continues to grow now that I’m a parent) “Um, is that our dinner cutlery under your arms?”
