Loser Draw….

I’ve never been able to draw anything.

I was able to hide this fatal flaw in my genetic make-up until having kids but if becoming a parent has taught me anything it’s that at some point, one of them is going to say to you, “Mommy, draw me a kitten flying a kite over a carnival and make the kitten have green wings and a backpack” and then you try to distract them with candy. But at some point, you’re drawing that three dimensional cube telling them it’s a cat with a kite.

This morning Chloe said, “Mommy, can we see loser draw?”

I had to stop what I was doing, lower myself to her level so our eyes met and talk to her about how hurtful it is to be called a loser.

We discussed name calling, Mommy’s inability to draw and how that doesn’t make her (or anyone) a loser it just means she’s better at something else so drawing had to take a back seat–the equivalent of a blind person having a heightened sense of hearing.

She looked so confused. Was this conversation getting too heavy?

Hanna said, “Mom, I think she wants to watch the tv show ‘Win, Lose or Draw.’”

Noted.
