What Is A Potluck?…

Ellie asked me what it meant to be invited to a potluck last night.

I explained to her it was the highest honour bestowed by the Queen. Sir Potluck of Cambridge was a great, great uncle of ours.

Then I told her a potluck is when a group of people get together to have a meal and everyone brings their favourite dish to contribute. Then everyone gets a taste of everything.

“Well, what if someone shows up at the potluck but doesn’t bring anything?”

Stumped.

“What if someone comes to the potluck and starts taking food but wasn’t invited?”

Well that’s frowned upon.

“But what do you do?”

I guess you start by making a citizen’s arrest but I’m not sure it’s ever been done before.

“Could I come as your guest to a potluck and still eat the foods?”

Yes.

“Could I eat everything or just some things?”

Well depending on any allergies and your appetite, you could probably have a small sampling of everything though most people just choose to load up on Daddy’s famous beans and then get out of the line.

“What if two people bring the same thing?”

That’s easy, fist fight.

“What if three people…..”

Let me stop you right there. I’ve never been to a potluck where only one person has brought deviled eggs, yet somehow they all get eaten and everyone remains friends.

“What if someone brings a plate of orange slices?”

That would be that person’s last potluck.

“How do you know where the potluck is going to be?”

Treasure maps prior to 2005 but now it’s all done through GPS.
