Favourite Day….

My favourite day of the week has to be grocery day.

The good news is grocery day comes about every three days so I’ve been having a lot of favourite days lately.

There’s something uplifting about saying to the kids, “Would you like fresh raspberries, grapes, oranges, pears, nectarines or Ontario peaches for your snack?” as opposed to the next day when I can offer to divide a dried mango into quarters.

For some reason yesterday I was frazzled, even rushing while attempting to get ready. Why was I in such a hurry to get ready when the only thing I needed to actually accomplish was a grocery run? I guess it makes me feel important, like I have somewhere to be and it has to be by 9:00am sharp or the good bags of mini carrots will be picked over.

Still, I opted for a shower cap shower and found myself chasing the kids with the buzzing electronic toothbrush as we ran down the hall. This all helps with the illusion of importance if I can sigh and make a huge mess while trying to race out the door.

I asked Chloe if she ate any Cheerios and she lifted her shirt to examine the outside of her belly. Obviously at 20 months, one would expect to see the Cheerios swimming around or at the very least a bulging cereal-induced swell. Yep, I’m going to love this day.

I took pictures of the girls puddle jumping to capture what I saw as a special moment. There isn’t a camera in the world that could re-tell the story of three, giggling kids, splashing each other, Crocs filling with water and squirting out of the holes, anticipating fresh fruit grocery day, always trumping raisin in a box on a Triscuit sandwich day. Chloe took off her clothes followed by her diaper. Thanks once again for taking it one step too far.

Today, I turn thirty-six.

While it isn’t grocery day and the puddles appear to have dried, I’m learning life gets better when you slow down and enjoy it. It’s about the little things, the little people, the giggles, the puddles, the diapers, the friends, the family, the husband, the Cheerios.

Today, I hope to go for a bike ride with my kids, change ten diapers, get my hair-cut (thanks Mom), shower without a shower cap and be taken to one of our kid’s favourite restaurants for dinner.

This is shaping up to be my favourite day.
